Conceived by former president Itamar Franco in the late 1990s, the Zona da Mata Regional Airport emerged as a project to leverage the economy of the region of Juiz de Fora - MG, to facilitate cargo transport and expand the supply of public transport in the region. Since the announcement of its construction in 1999 until today, it has been the subject of debates and controversies about its location and installation.

Due to the Francisco Álvares de Assis Airport (IATA:JDF / ICAO:SBJF), the Serrinha Airport, located in the city of Juiz de Fora, which has ceiling problems, in November 1999, the government of the state of Minas Gerais started projects and studies for the construction of a new airport to replace the previous one.

The airport has regular flights to São Paulo (Congonhas and Guarulhos) and Confins. They operate Azul, Gol and Latam.
