4.3/5 (35)

Fernando de Noronha – Governador Carlos Wilson Airport (IATA: FEN, ICAO: SBFN), is a Brazilian airport and was built in 1934. In 1942, during World War II, the United States Army Air Forces through the "Airport Development Program", built the new runway and passenger terminal. In 1975, there was an extension for the landing of Boeings. The airport operates domestic flights and has the capacity to receive medium-sized aircraft such as the Boeing 737.

According to the Civil Aviation Secretariat, in 2015, it was one of the 65 airports in Brazil that handled the most passengers. On December 21, 2015, Anac raises the airport's classification to 2nd category (previously 3rd), staying at the same level as many airports in capitals, such as João Pessoa (PB), Vitória (ES) and Goiânia (GO). Another in the state in this same category is the Petrolina International Airport – Senador Nilo Coelho. The current passenger terminal is considered small for the daily flow of passengers it receives, and should be renovated.

It is one of the 9 airports that is included in the Regional Aviation Development Plan (PDAR), which will receive investments from the Federal Government, around 220 million reais, only for the state of Pernambuco. The work is expected to begin in the second half of 2014 and be completed in a maximum of one year.

According to the Civil Aviation Secretariat, in a document updated on August 12, 2015, this airport is in the second stage (of five), which is the Preliminary Study Phase. There will still be the preliminary project, bidding and works phase. By the end of June 2016, nothing had happened, that is, there was no progress.

In April 2019, the Ministry of Infrastructure authorized the start of the bidding process aimed at renovations at the Governador Carlos Wilson Airport, in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago. The investment is R$ 5 million, and will have the support of the Government of the State of Pernambuco, with resources from the National Civil Aviation Fund (FNAC). The renovation aims to implement a system of autonomous simple approach and obstacle lights, to facilitate the landing and takeoff of aircraft on the island at night.

The current passenger terminal is considered small for the daily flow of passengers it receives, and should be renovated. The launch of the public notice by the Government of the State of Pernambuco is awaited so that the bidding for the future renovation can be made. The current maneuvering yard allows simultaneous operation of up to 03 Boeing 737s and the runway is 1840 m long. After the renovation, the airport is expected to hold up to 7 aircraft simultaneously. The forecast for 2025 is also that the airport will handle approximately 276 thousand passengers per year.
