Saint Helena Airport is an international airport on Saint Helena, a remote island in the south Atlantic Ocean which forms part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha.
Saint Helena is more than 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) from the nearest major landmass. Prior to the opening of the airport, the island was only reachable by sea, making it one of the most remote populated places on earth.
The airport was opened in May 2016, but scheduled commercial services only began on 14 October 2017 when the South African carrier Airlink inaugurated a weekly service from O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, to Saint Helena using an Embraer E190.
Saint Helena is known for being the site of Napoleon's second exile, following his final defeat in 1815. He had a home on the island at Longwood House where he died on the 5th of May 1821.
