The airport started its operations in 1988. In 2022, Kaunas Airport facilitated travel for 1.3 million passengers. A terminal expansion is planned in the first quarter of 2024, this development will double a passenger capacity @Kaunas Airport to 2 million passengers per year. Situated 14 km (8.7 mi) northeast of Kaunas city centre and 100 km west from the capital Vilnius, Kaunas Airport holds a prominent position as the second busiest civil airport in Lithuania, trailing only Vilnius Airport. Furthermore, it ranks as the fourth busiest airport in the Baltic states. The airport features 20 aircraft stands, and its runway, measuring 3,250m in length and 45m in width, holds a 4E ICAO reference code. This classification allows the handling of aircraft with a maximum wing span of 45m and a main gear wheel span of 14m, accommodating planes the size of a Boeing 747. The runway is aligned with the prevailing direction of western winds. Additionally, it is equipped with CAT II ILS equipment, enabling the reception of aircraft even in close-to-minimum-visibility meteorological conditions. The theoretical average capacity of the runway during landing or takeoff operations is 12 per hour. Kaunas Airport operates as a pivotal hub for Low-Cost Carriers (LCC), Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services, and Cargo operations, positioning itself as a crucial crossroads for logistics corridors in the region. The airport's strategic location in the central part of the country enhances its connectivity and accessibility, contributing to its growing significance in the Baltic aviation landscap.
