Franing Field made headlines from the start, chosen as the checkpoint for the first coast-to-coast flight in the fall of 1919. Over 400 men spent three years preparing the airport for its first paved runways and taxiways. In 1947, it became the "Metropolitan Airport" and today, the airfield is known as the "Quad Cities International Airport".
