The airfield is located to the south-east of the city of Strasbourg, at a place called Polygone, to the east of the Neuhof district.

The Airfield became, from the birth of aviation, a field where the first aircraft were tested.

An army flying school during the First World War, the Polygone saw the establishment of the famous fighter plane unit, the Cigognes squadron, after the war. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry obtained his pilot's license there.
