In January 1925, an airfield was established at the former district of Santo Amaro do Ipitanga by French aviator Paul Vachet, where he landed on a Breguet 14.

In its early days, the airfield served as a stopover on the route to Buenos Aires and had only a small grass runway.

According to records, famous aviators like Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Jean Mermoz, Marcel Reine and Henri Guillaumet landed here.
