Historic Benbecula Airport - Scotland.

Details: Benbecula Airport (Scottish Gaelic: Port-adhair Bheinn na Faoghla) (IATA code: BEB, ICAO code: EGPL) is situated on the island of Benbecula, in the Outer Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland. It is a small rural airport owned and maintained by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited.

History: An airfield has existed at Benbecula since 1936, when Scottish Airways began operating at what was known as Balivanich Aerodrome, located in the north-west corner of the island.

WWII WAR Between 1941 and 1942, during the Second World War, the airfield became RAF Benbecula, when it came under the control of No. 15 Group (GR) of the Royal Air Force, Coastal Command. During this period, it housed aircraft conducting patrols in the Atlantic, protecting ship convoys from German submarines. [3] Such missions were carried out by the Lockheed Hudson and, later, by the Boeing Fortress and the Vickers Wellington. At its peak, RAF Benbecula had several thousand troops stationed at the base and at various other sites around the islands. Post War The airfield later became the control center for the nearby Hebrides Rocket Range. [3] After the Second World War, the airfield became Benbecula Airport. The airport offers regular services to mainland Scotland and other Hebridean islands. In doing so, it provides vital transport links to the islands of Benbecula, North Uist and South Uist, which are interconnected by a causeway but are more than two hours from the mainland by sea. The airport is also used by emergency air ambulance flights and by support flights to the nearby missile testing range.
