The City of Derry Airport (IATA: LDY, ICAO: EGAE) is a regional airport located in Eglinton, about 7 miles (11 km) northeast of Derry, Northern Ireland. It has played a significant role in the local economy and transportation network since its establishment.
The airport dates back to World War II and was originally built as RAF Eglinton in 1941. It served as a base for Royal Air Force (RAF) fighter squadrons and later for the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm. In 1947, after the war, the airfield was closed as a military base. In the 1950s, Eglinton airfield was used by local flying clubs and for private aviation and by the late 1970s, the local council saw potential in developing the site into a commercial airport. In 1978, the facility officially reopened as City of Derry Airport, operated by the local authorities. From the 1980' The airport saw increasing use for domestic flights, particularly to London and Glasgow and in 1999 A new terminal building was opened to accommodate growing passenger numbers.F urther expansion, including an extended runway, upgraded facilities, and improved safety features. The airport has faced challenges, including competition from Belfast airports and fluctuating passenger numbers. In recent years, City of Derry Airport has focused on maintaining key routes to London, Liverpool, and Glasgow, with airlines like Loganair and Ryanair operating flights. The airport continues to receive government support to ensure connectivity for the North West region. Current Status and Future Prospects City of Derry Airport remains an important transport hub for the Derry/Londonderry region and the wider northwest of Ireland.
