It served as a base for the Royal Air Force (RAF) and was a significant production site for aircraft such as the Airspeed Oxford, a twin-engine trainer aircraft used for pilot training. Additionally, Fairey Swordfish aircraft, a famous torpedo bomber, were produced and assembled here.
