Airport History: Wittman Regional Airport, also known as Wittman Field, is located just south of Oshkosh in Winnebago County, Wisconsin. The airport traces its origins to Oshkosh Airport, founded in 1927, before becoming Winnebago County Regional Airport in the early 1930s. Its modern identity is closely tied to Steve Wittman, the pioneering air racer, aircraft designer, and long-serving airport manager who arrived in Oshkosh in 1931 and helped shape the field’s aviation character for decades.

The airport was later renamed in Wittman’s honour and became one of the best-known general aviation airports in the United States. Since 1970, it has also been home to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the annual Experimental Aircraft Association fly-in and air show. During AirVenture, Wittman Regional is transformed into one of the busiest airfields in the world, with thousands of aircraft arriving from across the United States and beyond, making Oshkosh a global centre of aviation for one week each summer.

Today: Today, KOSH is a public-use, county-owned general aviation airport serving corporate aviation, flight training, aircraft maintenance, aircraft manufacturing, cargo, and private flying. Basler Flight Service provides FBO services, fuel, parking, hangars, charter support, and pilot services. The airport is also closely linked with the adjacent EAA Aviation Museum and remains an important year-round aviation hub for Oshkosh, with its international profile rising dramatically during the annual EAA AirVenture event.
