Astana is the capital of Kazakhstan. Known until 1998 as Aqmola, it was renamed in 2019 to Nur-Sultan, but was renamed again to its previous name, Astana, in 2022.

It is located along the Ishim River in the north of the country, in the Aqmola region, although it is administered separately as an independent entity.

Astana is an important point on the railways, not only in a north-south direction (from Petropavl, or Petropavlovsk, to Tasquente and Almati), but also west-east (from Moscow to China). The city is served by Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport.
