Asuncion is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Paraguay. It is an autonomous municipality and an independent Capital District, which means that it is not formally integrated into any department or state. It is located next to Asuncion Bay, on the left bank of the Paraguay River, opposite the confluence with the Pilcomayo River.
