Cartagena is a municipality in Spain in the province and autonomous community of Murcia.

The oldest known toponym for the area is Mastia, which traditionally identifies with the city in the Iberian or Tartesian periods. The Phoenicians founded a colony with the name Qart Hadašt ("new city"), the same as they had given to Carthage.
