Des Moines is the capital and the most populous city in the US state of Iowa. It is also the seat of the Polk County government. A small portion of the city extends into Warren County.

It was founded in May 1843 and incorporated as Fort Des Moines on 22 September 1851, later abbreviated to Des Moines.
