Hiroshima is the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. It is crossed by the Ota River (Ota-gawa), whose six channels divide the city into islands. It grew around a 16th century feudal castle. It received city status in 1589. It served as headquarters during the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–95).
