A Glimpse into History Founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital, Washington, D.C. was designed by Pierre (Peter) Charles L’Enfant, a French-born architect and city planner, drawing inspiration from cities like Paris, Amsterdam, Karlsruhe, and Milan. His vision included a grand, garden-lined avenue—now the National Mall—measuring approximately one mile (1.6 km) in length and 400 feet (120 m) wide.

Today, Washington, D.C. is home to over 700,000 residents, making it the 20th most populous city in the United States. Its metropolitan area, the sixth largest in the nation, spans parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia and had an estimated 6.2 million residents in 2017. Throughout the city, the three branches of the U.S. federal government—Congress, the President, and the Supreme Court—stand alongside iconic monuments, museums, and 177 foreign embassies. Washington also hosts the headquarters of notable international organizations, trade unions, and professional associations, including the World Bank Group, IMF, and the American Red Cross.
