City Update 12 beautifully enhances seven urban regions in Germany across five of its states: Augsburg in the state of Bavaria, Bremen in the state of Bremen, Dresden and its borough Leuben in the state of Saxony, Kiel in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Leipzig in the state of Saxony, and Münster in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. This latest offering invites Flight Simulator aviators to soar throughout landmarks including castles, botanical gardens, bridges, towering skyscrapers, and more—all reproduced in exquisite detail. Microsoft and partners created each of the seven areas of interest (AOIs) using the latest high-resolution aerial and satellite imagery, digital elevation models (DEMs), and TIN (triangulated irregular network) surface texturing.

What City Update 12 offers, in detail:

Augsburg, Bavaria: Located 30 miles to the west of the Bavarian capital of Munich in southern Germany, Augsburg is one of the country’s oldest cities. Augsburg was founded in 15 BC and grew to be one of the most important commerce centers in Europe. Through the centuries, Augsburg developed several notable architectural and infrastructural features, including an extensive network of canals, the Augsburg Town Hall, and the Fuggerei, the oldest social housing area in the world.

Bremen, Bremen: Bremen is the capital of the northwestern German state of Bremen and its most populous city. One of Germany’s oldest metropolitan areas with a history spanning more than 1,200 years, Bremen is renowned for its art and cultural vibrancy. Located 60 miles south of the North Sea along the Weser River, Bremen is one of the most important port cities in Europe (along with its neighboring city to its north, Bremerhaven). Some of Bremen’s most notable sights include St. Peter’s Cathedral and Bremen City Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Dresden and Leuben, Saxony: Dresden is the capital of the eastern German state of Saxony and its second most populous city after Leipzig. Dresden is an expansive city and includes the quarter and borough of Leuben to the southeast of Dresden’s city center (Leuben is a distinct AOI included in City Update 12). Established along the Elbe River in the early 1200s as a trading hub, Dresden became an important center for several industries, including manufacturing, banking, medical systems, photography and optics, and electronics. Notable landmarks in Dresden include the Zwinger Palace, Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady – Destroyed during Allied firebombing in World War II and rebuilt between 1994 and 2005), and Hofkirche (Court Church).

Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein: Located on the southwestern shore of the Baltic Sea on the Kiel Fjord, Kiel is one of Germany’s northernmost major cities. It is the capital of and most populous city in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and one of Europe’s most important ports. Founded in 1233, Kiel quickly became a major maritime hub and trading center. In addition to shipping and trade, Kiel developed a thriving shipbuilding center known for a full spectrum craft, from small vessels to large naval and commercial ships. Kiel is renowned for Kiel Week (also called Kiel Regatta), a major sailing festival held every summer, and is home to a diverse range of sights including the Kiel City Hall, the Schleswig-Holstein State Theater, and St. Nikolai Church.

Leipzig, Saxony: Leipzig, located at the confluence of the White Elster, Pleiße, and Parthe rivers on the North German Plain, is the most populous city in the state of Saxony. With origins dating to 1015, Leipzig was officially established in 1165 as a trade and commerce center. Through the centuries, it grew into a major center of publishing and education and is home to Leipzig University, one of Europe’s oldest learning institutions. Some of the city’s most notable attractions include the Monument to the Battle of the Nations (Völkerschlachtdenkmal), St. Nicholas Church, and St. Thomas Church.

Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia: Located along the Münstersche Aa river in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the city of Münster is renowned as a center of education and science. It is home to several universities, including University of Münster, one of Germany’s largest and most prestigious learning institutions. Münster traces its roots to the 6th century AD and was established in 793 as a religious center. Some of the most notable landmarks in the city include Münster Cathedral (also known as St. Paulus-Dom) and St Lambert’s Church.
