Beautiful Canyons Part V - VIII

This package includes 4 bush trips through the most beautiful canyons on Earth. Explore the canyons in Namibia, Nepal, Tibet and Montenegro.

Fish River Canyon

The Fish River Canyon is located in southern Namibia. With a length of about 160 kilometers, a width of up to 27 kilometers and a depth of up to 550 meters, washed out by the Fish River, it is the largest canyon in Africa and is considered the second largest canyon on earth after the Grand Canyon. It essentially runs through the Hunsberg Mountains and begins at Seeheim in the north and ends at Ai-Ais in the south. The Fish River Canyon impresses with its unique landscape. Only a few green bushes can be seen along the Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail on the canyon floor and its burnt out landscape. Water in the riverbed is only seen after heavy rains, especially in March and April; this persists in parts of the riverbed until June, after which there are only pools.

Kali Gandaki

In this part we go to Asia, to the land with the seat of the gods, as the highest mountains of the earth are called by the Nepalese - so on to Nepal, to the river Kali Gandaki. The canyon Kali Gandaki got its name from the river of the same name flowing on its bottom, in honor of the Hindu goddess Kali, who is a personification of the powerful forces of nature but also the goddess of destruction. According to existing estimates, the depth of the canyon from the highest peak to the valley floor is more than 6,000 meters (19,700 feet), making it the deepest canyon on Earth. The Grand Canyon, on the other hand, is only 5,900 feet (1,800 meters) deep but 450 kilometers long. The canyon is surrounded by majestic mountains, Annapurna and Dhaulagari, whose height is over 8,000 meters (26,300 feet). Thousands of travelers come here every year to feast their eyes on their mystical-looking peaks, and the indigenous people consider these places sacred.

Yarlung Tsangpo

The Yarlung Tsangpo Canyon could have served as a model for the famous Shangri-La in the book "Lost Horizon" by James Hilton because of the beauty of the canyons, their remoteness and mysteriousness. The Dihang Gorges have been a destination of Buddhist pilgrimages since ancient times. Among Buddhists, these gorges are the most famous example of a "pure and hidden land" both geographically and spiritually-religiously. According to the belief, it is a place that has a special geomancy and self-generated power points of its own, where all the features of the landscape correspond to certain parts of the body.

Tara

It is hardly known, yet it is the longest and deepest canyon in Europe. That is why it is also called the Grand Canyons of Europe. The Tara, with 140 kilometers the longest river in the country, has dug itself into the rock in this gorge. The river impresses with rapids, waterfalls up to 60 meters high and last but not least with the unearthly beautiful color of the water. Enclosed in a wonderful mountain landscape, which in spring and summer shines in the most magnificent green of the forests, the gorge winds through the country for a total of about 78 kilometers. In 1980, the lower part of the river, formed as a gorge, as part of the National Park Durmitor, was included by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
